The medieval village of the famous Certosa
Calci
Another medieval village near Locanda Sant'Agata is Calci, renowned for the Certosa and for being one of the most visited places in the Val Graziosa. The monumental complex of the Certosa di Calci includes the 1366 Certosian Monastery, which houses the Museum of Natural Sciences of the University of Pisa, one of the oldest museums in the world, famous for its rich collections of zoology, fossils, and minerals. Visiting the Certosa di Calci is truly a journey into the past, discovering art through frescoes, marbles, stuccoes, and the fascinating Chapels of San Giuseppe and the Rosary, frescoed by the Livorno painter Giuseppe Maria Terreni. Another must-see near Calci is the Rocca della Verruca, an ancient ruin dating back to the 13th century. The Rocca della Verruca is a popular spot for trekking and hiking enthusiasts: there is a one-hour walking route, and at the top, you can enjoy a stunning view. Calci, in addition to producing extra virgin olive oil, is also known as the "Village of a Hundred Mills" due to its past milling activity, with structures like the historic Molino Galgalandi still standing as testimony to that era.
