WHAT TO SEE IN LUCCA
The city of a hundred churches
Lucca is about 30 minutes from Locanda Sant'Agata and is easily reachable by public transport.
A city with timeless charm, enveloped in a magical atmosphere and the impressive 16th-century Walls. Towering at 12 meters high, the walls of Lucca are a prime example of modern fortification still intact, built upon an ancient medieval wall. While walking along the walls, you can enjoy an incredible, privileged view of some of the most important monuments, surrounded by a true urban park. The tree-lined avenue, featuring horse chestnuts, poplars, linden trees, and oaks, is a visual delight in every season, perfect for a romantic walk or a bike ride before delving into the heart of the city.
Heading toward the centre, about a 13-minute walk away, is Piazza Anfiteatro. Built in 1830 by architect Nottolini, Piazza Anfiteatro has a distinctive elliptical shape because it was constructed on the ruins of an ancient Roman theater. The buildings were built on the foundations of the ancient structure and follow its shape, making it one of Lucca’s most appreciated symbols by tourists. Piazza Anfiteatro, in addition to being important from a historical-artistic perspective, is also a perfect meeting spot, where you can take a break and enjoy a good glass of wine or coffee before continuing your exploration of the city. >Lucca is also known as the "city of a hundred churches," with numerous religious buildings constructed in different periods and architectural styles. Among the must-see sights are: the Cathedral of San Martino, an example of Renaissance Romanesque art, which houses masterpieces by some of Italy's most famous artists such as Tintoretto, Ghirlandaio, and Fra’ Bartolomeo. The Campanile of San Martino, the bell tower of the cathedral. The Church of San Michele, located in the square of the same name, features a Gothic-Renaissance style, with a mystical charm that captivates attention from the first glance, especially the marble statue on the façade depicting Saint Michael Archangel in the act of defeating a dragon with a spear. There are many other unmissable stops for your trip to Lucca: the Torre delle Ore and Torre Guinigi, the Church of San Frediano, palaces and museums rich in interesting collections such as Palazzo Mansi, the Museo della Fondazione Barsanti and Matteucci, and the Museo della Zecca di Lucca.
